I’m in the process of finishing up my Christmas shopping (still no idea what to get my parents, by the way). At any rate, today I spent some time working on my gifts for my two younger brothers… but any time I concentrate on my brothers for too long (the fact that one just got married and one’s turning 20 in February just for starters), I start feeling old. Which reminded me that I forgot to check in with this year’s Beloit College Mindset List. (Read my original post here) So, just to add insult to injury, I decided to read the mindset list for the Class of 2010… people who were born in 1988, people for whom “The Soviet Union has never existed and therefore is about as scary as the student union.” It’s so easy to forget how different the world looks through the glasses of different decades. And I think it’s always worth revisiting. When addressing an audience, it’s not only their vocabulary and customs you have to take into account… sometimes it’s their whole world view.
And sometimes it’s just unbelievable to be reminded that things you think are a given… just aren’t quite so obvious to others.
At any rate… good luck with your holiday shopping… and wish me luck on getting back to Denver tomorrow. Or at least wish me friendly people to hang out with in the Detroit airport. {sigh}
Merry Christmas!
